About Little Photo

Hey ๐Ÿ˜‰

Thank you for everyone who loved Little Photo.ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

This page is written for someone who want to know more about this app.

If you want to know story behind Little Photo, read below……

So, you may ask, what is Little Photo ?

  • Little Photo is not a Photoshop.
  • Little Photo is not a All-in-one replacement for your stock camera.
  • Little Photo is not designed for everyone.

When I got the idea of Little Photo, the concept is that I am not going to create a “mobile Photoshop”.

The traditional photo tool is way too complex. I don’t think that we should replicate the PC Photoshop style photo editing software on a 4″ small screen.

So, What is Little Photo ?

  • Little Photo is a toy.
  • Little Photo is a box of chocolate.
  • Little Photo could be used by children.

Therefore, Little Photo is not designed for everyone. I don’t think everyone love chocolate, right ? ๐Ÿ˜‰

One frequently asked question from users :

“Why the output photo is so small ?ย  Please increase the resolution.”

the best answer is that :

“Because this is called Little Photo, not Big Photo.”

hehe ๐Ÿ˜‰ย  The real answer is :

There is a memory limitation problem on android. It can cause Out-of-Memory error easily for processing a large photo. You know, it is not a Computer. For Android 1.6, it has a 16MB memory limit for each app. For 2.2, the limit is raised, but it is still not unlimited.

The another problem is that, large photo will slow down the process time. it is really bad idea ๐Ÿ™‚

From my internal test, the engine of Little Photo is able to process a large photo in high speed for most of the (about 70%) effects. However, it may cause FC on some older phone (out of memory).

The invention of new mobile hardware is really fast. There are new android phones in the market every month. It seems like the above problem (memory and speed limit) will be solved by future phone hardware.ย  ๐Ÿ˜‰

The another frequently asked question by users is:

“Why Little Photo does not support my camera functions ?ย ย  Such as zooming, touch focus….”

This is another problem. Since Little Photo is a “Android 1.6 compatible” app.ย  It does not support new functions that are introduced recently.

To solve this problem, one solution is to create a “HD” version of Little Photo. Using “Android 2.2” as its baseline, and give up the 1.6 users.

It may work. However, I don’t have that much time to maintain two different version of Little Photoย  ๐Ÿ˜‰

One thing that you may not know :ย  I am the only one in my development teamย  ๐Ÿ˜‰

I write Little Photo by myself in free time.

It is really hard to match the large-and-full camera app that is developed by a team or a software company.

Anyways, I will still try my best to improve this little appย  ๐Ÿ˜‰

The another frequently asked question is :

“Why update so much !!ย  The update is tooo frequent !”

Well…ย  I am so sorry about this.ย  ๐Ÿ™‚ย  It is my fault.

Sometimes when I publish a new update, I got the bug report instantly (from users or from my friends) and I found that it is a serious bug.

I have to fix it immediately.

For normal update, I will try to group the updates into a single weekly update.

The version number tells you what is the scale of each update:

eg:ย  from 2.3.0 to 2.3.1

This is a minor update. This means the new effects or tools are added. However, there is no architectural change. That means, it does not changed the shutter and photo loading code. Just few new functions are added.

eg: from 2.3.1 to 2.4.0

This is a major update. This means there are some big change. The app may contains some bug after update. The architectural change (camera, shutter, file loading, file saving, etc) is introduced.

There will be a 2.4.1 orย  2.4.2ย  “follow-up” bug fix after such major update. They are always come in short time ( from 10 minutes to 1 hour, or 1 day, or 1 week)

eg: from 2.4.0 to 3.0.0

This is a completely new version. This means there are some big change. The app may be redesigned to something really new or highly experimental. Such version update for Little Photo is rare.

These are the things that I want to share for Little Photo. Wish you enjoy this appย  ๐Ÿ˜‰

Hi, thanks for writing littlephoto. I’d like to offer some comments, but you don’t have to publish them on your blog.

Frequent updates are a good thing. It means you care about producing a good program. A new update every week is much better than a program that hasn’t got an update or a bug fix in years.

I’d also like to see higher resolution. I know, bigger photos means longer processing time; that’s ok. Since you’re already allowing multiple effects, why not work on a low-resolution preview and then apply the real effects in the background – Vignette and RetroCamera do this.

On that note, could you allow more than two effects to be applied, again with the understanding that each effect increases processing time.

I think you should give up on android 1.6. Even my G1 is running android 2.2.

I love little photo. It’s free and amazing. I love to get the plugin but paid apps are block here. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ
I have request though on the next update if it’s not to much to ask. Can you put a “save preset” on the list so that I could just point and shoot on that preset that I already set up. This would be awesome and just shoot like crazy. Oh auto save function too for that. ๐Ÿ˜›

Thanks again for this cool app in Android!

You should be able to find it in the folder marked “little photo” on your memory card. Otherwise you can find it in your “all photos” function.

I use my phone for work and I want to be able to save photos with a specific name. If I click ‘save’, the photo saves with a long string of characters with plenty of forward strokes but when I try to change the name, it says ‘save failed’. Can you tell me how to rename the photo and save it?

Hi! I’m a photography student and I adore your ap. I could have sworn the first time I used it that I could change the amount of the effect on a scale of like 0 to 100, but sense then I cannot figure out how I did that. I think that feature is extremely awesome, and giving my the control to choose how much of the effect is shown is lovely. ๐Ÿ™‚
